Maybe ten-year-old Elizabeth put it best when she said to her father, “But, Dad, you can’t be healthy if you’re dead.”
Dad, in a hurry to get home before dark so he could go for a run, had forgotten to wear his safely belt- a mistake 75% of theUSpopulation mike every day. The big question is why.
There have been many myths about safety belts ever since their first appearance in cars some forty years ago. The following are three of the most common.
Myth Number One: It’s best to be “thrown clear” of a serious accident.
Truth: Sorry, but any accident serious enough to “throw you clear” is also going to be serious enough to give you a very bad landing. And chances are you’ll have traveled through a wind shield (擋風玻璃)or door to do it. Studies show that chances of dying after a car accident are twenty-five times greater in cases where people are “thrown clear".
Myth Number Two: Safety belts “trap” people in cars that are burning or sinking in water.
Truth: Sorry again, but studies show that people knocked unconscious(昏迷)due to not wearing safely belts have a greater chance of dying in these accidents. People wearing safely belts are usually protected to the point of having a clear head to free themselves from such dangerous situations, not to be trapped in them.
Myth Number Three: Safely belts aren’t needed at speeds of less than 30 miles per hour( mph).
Truth: When two cars traveling at30 mphhit each other, an unbelted driver would meet the windshield with a force equal to diving headfirst into the ground from a height of 10 meters.

Doomed beauties such as Cleopatra and Marilvn Monroe were far from alone in their misery. Very attractive people tend to form partnerships that are less stable and satisfying than those enjoyed by plain Janes.
According to research by Dr John Blaine of theUniversityofSouthem Califormia, relationships between people whose professions largely depend on their appearances, such as models or actors, tend to end much faster than those between lawyers, doctors or students.
Blainesaid the beautiful felt different from childhood. They are treated as special, which may create both arrogance(傲慢)and insecurity. All too often, beauty can be used as an alternative to education. Often they are pushed out of their class or town, told to go off and make their fortune inHollywoodorLondonand, when the majority fail, they have few talents to make a living.
Blaineadded that beautiful people score poorly on the “big five” —the key factors American experts consider when helping distressed couples. These are neuroticism(神經過敏), including anger and anxiety; extroversion(性格外向); openness to new experiences; agreeableness; and conscientiousness, or sticking by agreements they have made. Attractive people often see no reason to try to change until their looks start to fade.
Krista Sutherland, of the University of California Los Angeles, said partnerships that appeared to be perfect from the outside, such as the former “dream teams” of Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise or Hugh Grant and Elizabeth Hurley, where backgrounds and aspirations(抱負)are often shared, did not necessarily lead to happiness.
  66. What does the underlined sentence “Doomed beauties such as Cleopatra and Marilyn Monroe were far from alone in their misery.” means?
  A. Beautiful women always felt lonely.
  B. Beautiful women always were alone.
  C. Many beautiful women didn't end up with a happy life.
  D. Beautiful women always lived a happy life.

  B. Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise were very satisfied with their life
  C. When they fail inHollywood, the beautiful have little trouble in making a living
  D. The marriage of the beautiful often last long
  69. Which of the following is the best title?
  A. Five key factors affecting the partnership
  B. Beauties are doomed to fail in love
  C. Beauties or common?
  D. The beautiful are different.
Wind is the great maker of waves. There are exceptions, such as the tidal(潮汐的)waves sometimes produced by earthquakes under the sea. But the waves most of us know are produced by winds blowing over the sea.
Now before constructing an imaginary life history of a typical wave, we need to know certain physical things about it. Awave has height, from trough(low point)to crest (high point). It has length-the distance from this crest to that of the following wave. The period of the wave means the time it takes for succeeding crests to pass a fixed point. None of these things stays the same-for all depend upon the wind, upon the depth of the water and many other matters.
The water that makes up a wave does not advance with it across the sea. Each drop of water turns around in a little circle with the passing of the wave, but returns very nearly to its original position. And it is fortunate that this is so. For if the huge masses of water that make up a wave actually moved across the sea, sailing would be impossible.
If we want to find the speed of a wave, we may use the following way:
  Speed=wavelengthfrequency
Here, wavelength is the distance between two high points(crests), frequency means the number of cycles per second.
  70. What causes waves?
  A. Earthquakes and nothing else. B. Only wind.
  C. Wind causes most waves. D. Wind causes some waves.
  71. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
  A. The water of a wave moves away across the sea.
  B. The water of a wave remains almost at the same place.
  C. The waster of a wave goes with the passing of the ware.
  D. The length of a wave means the distance from the top of a wave to the bottom.
  72. The speed of Wave 1 is100cm/s, frequency 10. The frequency of Wave 2 is 300, while its speed is twice that of Wave 1. Which of the following is right?
  A. The wavelength of the two is equal.
  B. The wavelength of Wave 1 is 10 times longer than that of Wave 2.
  C. The wavelength of Wave 2 is longer than that of Wave 1.
  D. The wavelength of Wave 1 is longer than that of Wave 2.

Readingto dogs is an unusual way to help children improve their literacy skills. With their shining brown eyes, wagging tails, and unconditional love, dogs can provide the nonjudgmental listeners needed for a beginning reader to gain confidence, according to Intermountain Therapy Animals (ITA) in Salt Lake City. The group says it is the first program in the country to use dogs to help develop literacy in children, with the introduction of Reading Edueation Assistance Dogs(READ).
The Salt Lake City Public Library is sold on the idea. “Literacy specialists admit that children who read below the level of their fellow pupils are often afraid of reading aloud in a group, often have lower self-respect, and regard reading as a headache,” said Lisa Myron, manager of the children’s department.
Last November, the two groups started “Dog Day Afternoon” in the children's department of the main library. About 25 children attended each of the four Saturday-afternoon classes, reading for half an hour. Those who attended three of the four classes received a “pawgraphed” book at the last class.
The program was so successful that the library plans to repeat it in April, according to Dana Thumpowsky, public relations manager.
  73. What is mainly discussed in the text?
  A. Children’s reading difficulties. B. Advantages of raising dogs.
  C. Service in public library D. A special reading program.
  74. Specialists use dogs to listen to children reading because they think ______________.
  A. dogs are young children's best friends
  B. children can play with dogs while reading
  C. dogs can provide encouragement for shy children
  D. children and dogs understand each other
  75. By saying “The Salt Lake City Public Library is sold on the idea”, the writer means the library ____________.
  A. uses dogs to attract children
B, accepts the idea put forward by ITA
  C. has opened a children's department
  D. has decided to train some dogs
  76. A “pawgraphed” book is most probably_____________.
  A. a book used in Saturday classes B. a book written by the children
  C. a prize for the children D. a gift from parents
